MORTAL SOULS

THE RUINED KINGDOM OF DORAINE

OVERVIEW

Doraine was the kingdom of judgmental holy men, who enforced virtue. The people seemed kind during times of peace, but that was only out of a horrible fear that consumed their thoughts. But during the war, they were steely hearted, killing those they deemed unworthy and offering the unrighteous Souls to their god. Theirs was the first Kingdom to be destroyed by the Phantasm, and that cold-hearted attitude has returned.

CHARACTERS

HIGH-PRIEST KANE OF DORAINE

Profile:

Kane used to be a relatively low ranking cleric, but after Doraine was destroyed, he was the highest ranking priest left, and a grim anger ignited within him.

When it became clear that the Phantasm could not be fought, he took control, and with a few survivors from his Kingdom, descended into the Ruins.

He seethes with fury, but keeps solemn composure so that he won't turn away potential converts.

Quest:

Kane has no quest, but is a representative of Doraine, and therefore encourages the player to swear loyalty to the Doraine Kingdom and execute heretics. Additionally, he will move down to the Sea of Souls once you defeat the Stalker.

DIALOGUE

-AT THE LIGHTHOUSE DOCK

FIRST CONVERSATION (IF FAITH IS BELOW 10)

"..."

"What are you, some sort of skeptic? Your faith is weak."

"Come back when your Soul accepts the divine."

FIRST CONVERSATION (IF FAITH IS GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 10)

"Do you offer your Soul to God?"

"If you don't, it is sure to be devoured by the Phantasm."

"It will devour everything, unless God deems this world worthy to save."

"I ask you again. Do you offer your Soul to God, and your corporeal body to the memory of Doraine?"

>Yes

"Then I welcome you to the ranks of the Crusaders."

>Given the Crusader's Charm

"Some among us still foolishly cling to a path of chaos, invading the worlds of others."

"It is they who will lead us all into ruin."

"When they dare cast those distortions between the worlds, use this Charm to hunt them down, and annihilate them."

"Keep bliss in your heart as you bathe in their blood. You are justified in the name of God."

"Always remember."

>No

"Get out of my sight, then. You may as well not exist."

SECOND CONVERSATION

"Miracles are the only true kind of magic, the only kind that comes from God himself."

"We clerics hold ire for all who twist the supernatural for their own gain, but reserve particular disdain for those who claim that their methods are good."

"The Yannites are like that, with their pompous Sorcery. But even worse are those Yuhoics."

"Those Heretics claim to use Miracles as well, but derive their power from nature."

"As if the dust and dirt could have any divine power! Such nerve cannot be forgiven."

THIRD CONVERSATION

"When... when Doraine fell..."

"Much of the higher ranking clergy died. Their Souls were ripped right from their bodies, devoured in an instant."

"My master left me with the Book of Judgement, and with the duty of guarding Priestess Erue."

"Her Soul is blessed by God. Who knows what fell power the Phantasm could've gained from it?"

"It is surely not an ordinary demon. It is an abomination, an affront against God. Why else would it target his most faithful servants first?"

FOURTH CONVERSATION AND ONWARDS

"We... we must persevere."

"But even if we should succeed... even if the Phantasm is destroyed... where shall we go?"

"Doraine... Doraine is..."

"Graaaagh! It's enough to make me...!"

>Attacks in front of him with his mace

"Haah... haah... excuse me. I apologize for that outburst."

"I... I must have more faith in God. I must not doubt. I must not doubt."

-AT THE SEA OF SOULS

FIRST CONVERSATION

"Look at this cesspool of molding Souls."

"I suppose this must be the afterlife. Where the Souls of the unworthy go, if they are not purified and joined with God."

"It is... mesmerizing in a way. But... it fills me with deepest dread. Why should such justice...?"

"Surely, it is only my own weakness. My own worry that I myself am unworthy."

"That God will cast me down into those waves."

SECOND CONVERSATION

"Gaze yonder, past the arches of shattered stone. Doesn't that aura look familiar?"

"It is that damn Phantasm, no doubt. Or something like it."

"Such an aberration should never be allowed to leave. Should it awaken, we shall be here, to combat it."

"It is our duty, as the last servants of God."

THIRD CONVERSATION

"Hehe... it's funny, you know? I only just now noticed what these stones are made of."

"Statues! And with such regal garb, and halos about the head. They must be graven images of old, false gods."

"Hahaha! How fitting that these old deities now crumble in the depths, while our God still stands tall!"

"Truly, it is a sign that we alone will triumph! Among all these pretenders, we have true divinity!"

"Ahahahahahaha...!"

"Haha... ha... ha..."

"..."

"(sob)"

SPECIAL DIALOGUE

GREETING

"Will you swear loyalty in God's last servants? Or... perhaps you simply require miracles."

INTERRUPTED MENU

"I would not be so quick to flee."

FAREWELL

"The Crusaders will aid you ever, Explorer."

POSITIVE TENDENCY GREETING

"Ah, welcome, ally. How goes the crusade?"

POSITIVE TENDENCY FAREWELL

"God bless you further, virtuous one."

NEGATIVE TENDENCY GREETING

"Hello, Heretic. Have you come to redeem yourself in the eyes of God?"

NEGATIVE TENDENCY FAREWELL

"For your own sake, let us meet again when your Soul is slightly less... black, with sin."

FIRST KINGDOM REWARD

"I see that many sinners have been expunged from these Ruins. The satisfaction is clear upon your face."

"Very well, I will share with you one of the clergy's greatest secrets. Speak to Priestess Erue, over there. She is blessed with saintly powers over the Soul, and can aid you in your endeavors."

>Doraine Soul Synthesis Unlocked

SECOND KINGDOM REWARD

"Your zeal is palpable! It seems that Ferdinand has some competition."

"Take these. They will allow you to hunt scoundrels ever faster, and turn their sneaky tricks against them."

>Given Retribution, and the Crusader's Crystal

FINAL KINGDOM REWARD

"...Hmm. Is that you? You stink of unclean blood."

"I suppose that's to be expected of one such as you. Take this and go wash off, thanks."

>Given a Memory of Saintbone

DORAINE CHAMPION BONUS

"...Ah. I am not worthy to be in your presence... One as blessed as you."

"It is almost as if God himself walks with you. Here, the last treasure of our shattered temples."

"You, and only you... can gaze upon this... Doraine's Book of Judgement."

>[Message Appears: Kane's book of Doraine can make Kingdoms look unfavorably on a targeted Explorer.]

PRIESTESS ERUE OF DORAINE

Profile:

Erue is a timid priestess of Doraine, who from birth was found to have a strange affinity for Souls. She was inundated with Doraine's teachings, and could recite them by heart, but is terrified of human contact, and more specifically, the disapproval of her superiors.

Quest:

Erue has no quest, but will give additional dialogue once Kane and Ferdinand leave.

DIALOGUE

FIRST CONVERSATION AND ONWARDS (IF NOT A MEMBER OF DORAINE)

"Please don't talk to me."

"I am to speak to no one but the Crusaders."

"The High-Priest commands it."

FIRST CONVERSATION (IF A MEMBER OF DORAINE)

"You are a Crusader? Then my words are free."

"My name is Erue, and I am a Priestess of Doraine."

"Before its fall, I studied night and day, learning every teaching passed down by the highest clerics."

"I'm afraid that I haven't much to offer. I can hardly cast a simple healing spell, myself."

"If you require Miracles, the High-Priest is more than willing to share."

SECOND CONVERSATION AND ONWARDS

"No, I'm quite boring, actually."

"I have no Miracles to give you, and I must stay put."

"Kane- I mean, the High-Priest, is quite insistent."

"And I must listen to him. Who else is closer to God?"

DORAINE SOUL SYNTHESIS UNLOCKED

"Oh dear, the secret's out, is it? Kane must have told you."

"Yes, I have a strange power. I cannot cast Miracles, but I can touch Souls, and imbue them with heavenly power."

"In this Ruin, brimming with powerful creatures, surely you have some Soul I can alter to a more fitting state?"

ONWARDS

"I am told that my abilities are a gift from God. But-"

"You must agree not to tell Kane."

"Sometimes I doubt it. I simply twist Souls into new shapes, ones that seem more refined and luminous."

"How is that any different from those Vestum brutes? Or the Demons?"

"Yes, I know of them. I am not as ignorant as they would-"

"..."

"I've said too much."

FIRST CONVERSATION (AFTER KANE AND FERDINAND DEPART FOR THE SEA OF SOULS)

"..."

"Ah! Oh, God, pardon me. I dreamt I was back in the temples."

"But thankfully, I remain here. Though, it still seems like I am dreaming."

SECOND CONVERSATION

"...Are they gone? The High-Priest and Crusader? Really, truly gone?"

"Oh, joy! May they never return! Damn them both. Damn them!"

"Aha, what a rush! Is this what freedom feels like?"

"This is the first time in years that I've ever been really, truly alone. Save for you, of course."

THIRD CONVERSATION

"Since I was young, the teachings of Doraine had been drilled into my mind, without end! I became intimately familiar with them."

"But any flaw I found was quickly rationalized, or worse, I was reprimanded for even discovering it. It felt like they were closing doors in my face."

"I used to whisper curses at the high clergy, in my bed at night. I dare not say them out loud, where I would have the sin beaten out of me."

"They wanted a pure maiden of God, a prim-and-proper weapon. So I kept up my appearance. They were none-the-wiser, of course."

FOURTH CONVERSATION

"I sometimes wonder whether I truly believe in God. The thought of not believing is almost unthinkable. An impossibility."

"Especially when I touch the Soul. I feel some... force, come through me, guiding my hand."

"But there is no warmth in that touch, no voice. I only see visions of the clerics' stern faces, of their cold words of instruction."

"I guess that's all I think about when my mind drifts to God, every now and then. Cold faces, cold hearts."

"I see them in my dreams, tormenting me."

FIFTH CONVERSATION AND ONWARDS

"I am grateful to be free, but what now?"

"What's the point of anything now, really?"

"Are we to remain here for the rest of our lives, or face the Phantasm above?"

"I have all these questions, and no answers."

"It leaves me longing for my old naiveté, when I could believe that every uncertainty would be solved by God."

"I can't go back. Not now, not ever. But I miss it."

SPECIAL DIALOGUE

GREETING

"By the power of God, the Souls you bear shall be transfigured. Produce them, Explorer."

INTERRUPTED MENU

"Something the matter?"

FAREWELL

"God sees through all earthly shadows, and all barriers of thought. That is the first Dorainian teaching."

FREED GREETING

"Hey, Explorer! Divine powers for cheap, right here!"

FREED FAREWELL

"Thanks for coming back. It's so nice to have sane company for once."

CRUSADER FERDINAND

Profile:

Ferdinand is a dimwitted Crusader who delights in the suffering of sinners. He obeys Kane completely, as without him, he cannot discern between right and wrong, friend and foe. He has no will of his own.

Quest:

Ferdinand has no quest, but will move down to the Sea of Souls once you defeat the Stalker. Additionally, he will invade you if you are offline and an enemy of Doraine.

DIALOGUE

-AT THE LIGHTHOUSE DOCK

FIRST CONVERSATION

"..."

"Huh? Who are you?"

"Are you good, or bad?"

"How 'bout you say bad, so I can kill you? You'll just come back anyway, right? Like the rest do?"

SECOND CONVERSATION

"I'm Ferdinand. A Crusader."

"Kane tells me who the bad people are, and then I go and kill them."

"Someone invade? I kill them. Someone make Kane mad? I kill them."

"Make me mad? I kill you."

"As long as you're bad, I'll kill you. It feels nice, cleaning dirty blood off your sword at the end of the day."

THIRD CONVERSATION AND ONWARDS

"Tell me if you see any invaders, eh?"

"Gotta keep my sword greasy."

-AT THE SEA OF SOULS

FIRST CONVERSATION

"..."

"I dunno about you, but I don't get any of this."
